A Night at The Yards 2008

Living Classrooms' 1st annual "Night at The Yards" fundraiser in Washington, DC will be held October 24th on the Southwest waterfront! Proceeds from the event will support Living Classrooms' programming in the National Capital Region. Stay tuned for more information!

EASTSIDE TARGET INVESTMENT ZONE INITIATIVE

Living Classrooms Foundation is embarking on a ten-year effort to improve the education, career prospects, and self-sufficiency of Baltimore’s Eastside children and adults in order to help break a cycle of poverty and revitalize the communities served. Many of Living Classrooms’ most successful programs already serve the targeted community and we will increase their capacities in order to serve many more residents. 

Just blocks north and east of the Foundation’s East Harbor Campus are some of the city’s most economically and socially disadvantaged neighborhoods including the Perkins Homes and Fayette Street Corridor neighborhoods and McElderry Park. We have identified these areas as part of a “Targeted Investment Zone (TIZ).”

Living Classrooms engaged in an 18-month planning process funded by the Annie E. Casey Foundation to identify this zone within East Baltimore and the desired results, as well as successful models, community resources, and key partners. The Foundation’s efforts are inspired by Geoffrey Canada and the Harlem Children’s Zone.  In partnership with the City, the initiative will target the resources and talents of Living Classrooms and our partners in improving performance in school and at work among residents in these neighborhoods. By helping people develop the academic, social, and vocational tools that lead to success in school and work, we will also realize positive changes in the health of the entire neighborhood. Important indicators of neighborhood health that the Foundation will seek to improve include juvenile crime, adult crime, recidivism, and student/school performance. 

The program design focuses on education and workforce development. Living Classrooms will partner with six local elementary and middle schools and the Baltimore Curriculum Project. Living Classrooms’ Carmelo Anthony Youth Development Center and Safe Streets office are community resource hubs within the Target Investment Zone. The Crossroads School serves youth residing in the targeted zone, and Living Classrooms’ Project SERVE program is focusing on the physical improvement of the targeted area. Project SERVE is already responsible for the City’s Bureau of Solid Waste’s work in the McElderry Park area of the TIZ.
