Living Classrooms of the National Capital Region

Living Classrooms of the National Capital Region (LC-NCR) is bringing innovative, hands-on education to disadvantaged youth in the District of Columbia and surrounding metro area. In 2001, Living Classrooms expanded to serve DC-area children and young adults and now serves over 20,000 youth each year.

Living Classrooms is conducting its nationally recognized shipboard education programs on the Anacostia and Potomac Rivers, aboard the historic Chesapeake Bay buyboat, Half Shell. For many of these students, this program represents their first experience on the water. This integrated learning adventure reinforces academic skills in a real-world setting, while they learn about their community and its resources. Living Classrooms' Outreach Programs bring hands-on learning to classrooms, and include science and environmental programming, as well as after-school activities.

The Annie E. Casey Foundation is supporting Living Classrooms' Workforce Development Center program in the National Capital Region that is providing job training and employment assistance to disadvantaged youth. In a city where the violent death rate of juveniles is three times the average for the 50 largest US cities (Urban Institute 2004), it is imperative that young people are given opportunities to develop a love of learning and improve their chances of success in school and in life. Thousands of DC area youth are involved in these new Living Classrooms programs.
